Out of the mailbags of the Israeli and Canadian postal authorities has come a symbol of good will and diplomacy: a joint Israel-Canada commemorative stamp.
It is the first of its kind between the two nations and it’s being labelled the little paper ambassador.
The joint stamp was officially issued on April 14, 2010, with a purpose to celebrate the solid 60-year friendship between two nations that have strengthened each other in the areas of culture, education, business and tourism.
The unveiling ceremony of the commemorative stamp took place in Israel at the official residence of the Canadian Embassy.
Canada has demonstrated its support for Israel’s security and existence in peace with its neighbours over the past year under the leadership of the Prime Minister said Canadian ambassador to Israel His Excellency Jon Allen “I think the fact that we’ve been able to do this together simply re-enforces that support.”
The joint Canada-Israel stamp bears the iconic symbols of both nations: the Canadian maple leaf and the Israeli Magen David or Star of David. Israeli Postal Company CEO and president Avi Hochman said the stamp’s design was carefully chosen.
“One thing that is amazing … these symbols are made from a composition of people. What more is that the relations between (the) people (are) good, and especially between our two countries.”
Ambassador Allen said the issuing of a joint stamp between Canada and other nations was not a common occurrence.
Joint stamps were not frequent and usually reserved for a major event more like 100 or 250 years of relationship. “It takes almost two years to get a joint stamp produced and issued and we moved this in less than a year.”
This Israeli initiative, which was fast-tracked by the Canadian government, sent a clear message to the people of Israel.
Israeli Knesset Member Yohanan Plesner said many Israelis felt a kind of a siege mentality, “that our interests are not well understood and neither are our intentions. I think the fact that we have a strong friendship with Canada that we can trust and that we can rely on, (and) that we know we are not misunderstood, has a lot of importance (in Israel).
At a time when Israel’s relations with other western nations is under increasing strain, the little paper ambassador is receiving a stamp of approval in Israel.

C’est le premier timbre du genre entre les deux nations et on l’appelle le petit papier ambassadeur inscrit sur les sacs postaux de courrier entre les autorités israéliennes et canadiennes. C’est également un symbole de bonne volonté et de la diplomatie entre les deux pays. Ce timbre commémoratif est un projet en partenariat entre Israël et le Canada.
Ce timbre commémoratif a été officiellement publié le 14 avril 2010 dans le but de célébrer les 60 années d’amitié entre les deux nations ayant collaboré dans les domaines de la culture, de l’éducation, des affaires et du tourisme.
La cérémonie de dévoilement du timbre commémoratif a eu lieu en Israël à la résidence officielle de l’ambassade du Canada.
Le Canada a démontré son appui à la sécurité d’Israël et à son droit de vivre en paix avec ses voisins au cours de la dernière année sous la direction du Premier ministre a déclaré l’ambassadeur canadien en Israël Son Excellence Monsieur Jon Allen: «Je pense que le fait que nous ayons été en mesure de le faire ensemble renforce tout simplement ce soutien. ”
Ce timbre conjoint Canada-Israël porte les symboles emblématiques des deux nations: la feuille d’érable canadienne et le Magen David israélien ou l’étoile de David. Le président-directeur général de la Société Postale d’Israël M. Avi Hochman a déclaré que la conception du timbre a été soigneusement choisie.
“Une chose intéressante à signaler … ces symboles ont été conçus par des propositions provenant de la population et les relations entre les peuples c’est bien mais surtout entre nos deux pays. ”
L’Ambassadeur Allen a déclaré que la publication d’un timbre conjoint entre le Canada et d’autres pays n’était pas un phénomène habituel.
Les timbres commémoratifs conjoints ne sont pas fréquents et généralement ils sont réservés à un événement majeur comme plus de 100 ou 250 ans de relation. «Il faut près de deux ans pour obtenir un timbre commémoratif conjoint et nous avons réussi à produire et lancer celui-ci en moins d’un an.”
Cette initiative israélienne qui a été suivie par le gouvernement canadien de façon accélérée a envoyé un message clair au peuple d’Israël.
M.Yohanan Plesner, membre de la Knesset, a signalé que beaucoup d’Israéliens sentent une sorte de mentalité «d’assiégé »parce que nos intérêts et nos intentions ne sont pas bien compris. Également je pense que notre forte amitié avec le Canada à qui nous pouvons faire confiance et sur lequel nous pouvons compter a beaucoup d’importance en Israël parce que nous savons que nous ne sommes pas compris par plusieurs pays.
À une époque où les relations d’Israël avec les autres nations occidentales sont sous une pression croissante, ce timbre ambassadeur reçoit un sceau d’approbation en Israël.
