“I would like to commend Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper for taking a step that showed leadership and daring and which sends a clear message to Iran and the entire world,” opened Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s official statement in response to the closing of Canada’s embassy in Tehran and the Iranian embassy in Ottawa.  Israeli tabloids followed suit and applauded Harper’s actions, moving Canada up a notch as moral leader of the globe.

“Canada has proven that principles have precedence over comfort,” responded Israeli President Shimon Peres, in hopes that Canada’s stance would motivate other western nations to follow suit.

Personally, I noticed an immediate response on the streets of Jerusalem.  While purchasing a transistor radio – an apparent necessity during times of war – it came to the attention of the storeowner that I am Canadian.  He responded by tossing in an extra supply of batteries and remarked, “You are welcome in this country.”
