Israelis were glued to their radios and televisions last night as Prime Minister Netanyahu officially announced a ceasefire with Hamas and the conclusion of Operation Pillar of Defense: “… at present, the right thing for the State of Israel is to exhaust [the] possibility of reaching a long-term cease-fire,” said the PM.
When Israelis awoke this morning, the skies over the nation were quiet.
For those living in southern Israel, the calm was a welcomed respite from eight days of sirens, the impact of pounding rockets, and life disrupted by the continual need to run into the closest protected area. For those Israelis whose brothers and sisters, fathers and husbands had been called up as reservists, the announcement brought a sigh of relief. A ground invasion had been avoided.
Yes, silence is golden.
Yet there was a sense of sobriety in the air. No euphoric celebrations of battle victories, only an unspoken realization that the conclusion of fighting also gives Hamas a golden opportunity to re-arm and reorganize for its next assault on the State of Israel.
