On March 20, 2013, President Barak Obama will be making his highly anticipated visit to Israel– the first overseas trip of his second term.
Why Israel first?
Historically, a sitting second-term US president’s dream has been of leaving a legacy that includes solving the crisis in the Middle East. And Obama is no exception.
Yes, there will be discussions focused on denuclearizing Iran and handling the escalating unrest in Syria, however foremost on Obama’s agenda will be to kick start a formal peace agreement between Israel and the Palestinians.
The Israelis are more than willing to talk. By appointing Tzipi Livni to the post of leader of the peace process – assuming that Netanyahu successfully builds a coalition government by the end of next week- the Israeli PM is signaling to the Americans that he is ready to concede much of the West Bank for peace.
