Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu

As a young, adamant 28-year-old MIT graduate, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu – then known as Ben Nitay – went on record to express his thoughts regarding the “two state” solution to peace.  Netanyahu first pointed out that a Palestinian state already existed.  It was called Jordan – a nation where 60% of its population was Palestinian Arab in 1978 – the year Netanyahu made these statements.  Netanyahu then added, “There is no right to establish a second [Palestinian] state on my door step which will threaten my existence. There is no right whatsoever.”

Fast forward 35 years.  At the inter-governmental consultations in Poland yesterday, the Israeli Prime Minster said, “My goal is to see a historic compromise … a demilitarized Palestinian state that recognizes the Jewish state, with iron clad security arrangements for Israel – recognition, security, demilitarization … I am ready for such a peace.”

Clearly, the years have shifted the seasoned politician’s stance.  Netanyahu now strongly endorses the “two state” solution and is willing to work with the US administration to carve up Israel in order to create a Palestinian state largely based on pre-1967 borders.

“I look forward to enter those negotiations without preconditions without delay,” added Netanyahu. “I am ready for such a peace.  I hope the Palestinians are ready too.”
